Being by far one of the most wonderful buildings of Thessaloniki, the Municipal Central Library is located in one of the city’s busiest streets. It is housed in a modern structure that can’t be missed while it is a favorite destination for every book lover!

The first Municipal Library of the city was founded in 1932. The official opening ceremony took place at the historic YMCA building sever years later in 1939. The initial collection was consisted of more than 2500 books.

During the difficult years of the German Nazi occupation the library had to remain closed, while in 1945 it opened its doors once again in Agia Sophia St.

In 1947 it returned to YMCA where it remained until 2000. After the completion of the new building it moved to its current location.

The first donation for the creation of the new building was made in 1987 by George Vafopoulos (120 million drachmas) during the celebrations for the 50 years of the institution.

A historic institution in a beautiful building

The new facilities offered the ability to add many new features for both printed and digital archives and other material. The book collections were significantly increased while a new children library was added.
